Secret Art

Theodor Seuss Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) delighted millions worldwide as author and illustrator of some of the 20th Century's most beloved books for children. However, the paintings and illustrations included in the Dr. Seuss Archival Works show another facet of Geisel's artistic expressions as seen in his political cartoons, advertising illustrations, select private works and some of his more obscure books for children. Two of Seuss's notable projects in the late 1920s and early 1930s, included a national ad campaign for Standard Oil of New Jersey, as well as Life and Judge magazine covers. Geisel's hallmark wit and whimsy was already evident in these works, as it was in his early paintings done for select books in the 1940s and 1950s. The enduring satirical messages of Dr. Seuss's Archival Works are a testament to his sharp creativity and his poignant comments on life throughout the 20th Century.

As Pablo Picasso’s “Blue Period” is defined by blue dominate paintings from 1901–1904, Seuss’s “Deco Period” is noted specifically for black dominate backgrounds in a number of his most developed and completed paintings from the 1930’s to the 1940’s.

Arabic editions from Geisel’s “Deco Period,” including Elephant Presenting Flower to a Bird, Pink-Tufted Small Beast in a Night Landscape and Tower of Babel are now sold out and highly sought-after.

Throughout his career, Ted Geisel was fond of bold color, felines, and strong design; the three critical elements featured in his circa 1970’s oil painting, Lion Stroll.

In 1973, Theodor Seuss Geisel donated what he considered to be one of his important works, the lion wading pool, to the San Diego Wild Animal Park in California. Around this same time, Seuss painted Lion Stroll, an artwork that represents one of the finest examples of bold color throughout his entire oeuvre.

According to Cathy Goldsmith, his art director at Random House from 1980 through 1991, Ted was very particular and idiosyncratic concerning his use of color. “Just as some lucky people are blessed with perfect pitch, she believed a few like Ted are blessed with perfect color sense."

In this artwork, Seuss’s family pride of lions purposefully strolls along a path of inventively patterned trees as they explore their next adventure.

Gosh!, Do I Look as Old as all That! is from a special series of “La Jolla Birdwoman” paintings that Ted Geisel created in the early 1960s. This string of artworks is described in the November 1964 issue of McCall’s Magazine – “It delights Geisel, a bird watcher on the social scene, when he isolates the not-too-rare local species he calls the La Jolla Birdwoman as it functions in its native habitat of luncheons, parties, and charity balls.” (p. 201)

Other celebrated “La Jolla Birdwoman” images include I’d Love to Go to the Party but I’m Absolutely Dead, Martini Bird, My Petunia Can Lick Your Geranium, Not Speaking, Sunbathing Bird, Client with Architect, Raising Money for the Arts and View from a Window of a Rented Beach Cottage.

Gosh! is a perfect companion piece to Dr. Seuss’s Young Man Shaving.  A limited quantity of matched numbered suites of Young Man Shaving and Gosh! are reserved at the special price of $1,995 retail.

The Manly Art of Self Defense is clearly one of Dr. Seuss’s appropriately satiric works in the vein of I’d Love to go to the Party, but I’m Absolutely Dead.  Revealing his “gentlemanly” side, Ted Geisel portrays the cultured expression of masculinity, which is acquired through a balanced regimen of intellectual and physical muscularity.  The wonderfully erudite expression on the boy’s face suggests “the manly art of self defense,” while the cat’s look of surprise suggests the boy is out of his mind.  Seuss’s take on boxing places it squarely as a “noble art” rather than a martial art.

Dr. Seuss was living and working in New York City as an editorial cartoonist in the 1930s when Surrealism crashed onto the art scene in the United States. Being a part of that explosive time had a profound impact on Ted's artistic ideas and development. His fascination with both the Surrealist and Dada movements becomes ingeniously clear in wry artworks such as The Joyous Leaping of Uncanned Salmon, Fooling Nobody, and I Dreamed I Was the Doorman at the Hotel Del Coronado.

As is the case with many of his paintings, Ted Geisel's titles provide a gateway to the logistical insanity of his creative imagination. In this piece, he serves up punchy color set against a geometric platform where paisley-styled "salmon" jump for joy. Seuss purposefully asks questions that he intends the viewers to answer for themselves such as, "Are these Salmon having a final celebration before their journey to the cannery, or have they completely escaped this unsavory predicament?"

Myopic Woman encompasses elements of cubism, which was developed shortly after Seuss’s birth, between 1908 and 1912 in a collaboration between Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Ted Geisel’s wife had many cats and it was inevitable they would one day appear in his artworks.

Long known as an avid cultural sponge, Ted Geisel created this work smack dab in the middle of Peter Sellers’ multiple movie turns as Inspector Clouseau.  Ted Geisel’s abstract expressionist style takes us to the heart of the crime, surrounding us with the architectural echoes that are uniquely and stylistically Seussian.

Ted Geisel kept a file called the “shaving file” with ideas and concepts that came to him while shaving. He found shaving to be a very creative time. While shaving one morning, Ted pondered the swank New York party from the night before and compiled what he called his first poem. “Mrs. Van Bleck of the Newport Van Blecks / is so goddam rich, she has gold-plated sex / whereas Miggles and Mitzie and Bitzie and Sue / have the commonplace thing and it just has to do.”

    Self-Portrait Artist Worrying

    AVAILABLE

Includes Two Prints - Self Portrait of An Artist Worrying About His Next Book and Young Man Shaving.

It's facinating that this 1959 painting was done two years after The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas books were published in 1957. Despite their success, Seuss painted a portrait of himself worrying about his next book. One year later, he overcame self-doubt and wrote Green Eggs and Ham, the third best selling book in the English language according to Random House Inc.

Abstract expressionism was the rage in art schools across America beginning in the 1950s. Dr. Seuss incorporates this genre in a number of artworks including I Dreamed I was a Doorman at the Hotel Del Coronado, among others. Here we find one of Seuss’s most vivid palettes as he conveys organic elements and abstraction along with his signature sense of humor - as you discover a girl riding a unicorn in the lower right-hand corner of the artwork.
