Illustration Art

Like Norman Rockwell, Seuss personally created every rough sketch, preliminary drawing, final line drawing and finished work for each page of every project he illustrated.

Despite the technical and budgetary limitations of color printing during the early and mid-twentieth century, Dr. Seuss the artist was meticulous about color selection. He created specially numbered color charts and elaborate color call-outs to precisely accomplish his vision for each book. Saturated reds and blues, for example, were carefully chosen for The Cat in the Hat to attract and maintain the visual attention of a six-year-old audience.

By the time Seuss’s book career took off, sharp draftsman skills were evident in drawings. His ability to move a storyline ahead via illustrations filled with tension, movement and color became a hallmark component of his work, and the surreal images that unfolded over six decades became the catalyst for a humorous and inspired learning experience.

One of Dr. Seuss’s wonderfully rich stories is the unforgettable tale of The Sneetches—some with stars on their bellies and some without. It is this star, or lack of it, that brilliantly teaches children about social injustice and the senselessness of discrimination. A testament to the genius of this book came in 1998 when NATO translated The Sneetches and Other Stories into Serbo-Croatian and distributed it to 500,000 children in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of an information campaign to help encourage racial tolerance.

Audrey Geisel said of this undertaking: “Since my husband died, much has happened that I would have dearly loved to share with him, but none more than to have had him see his Sneetches, whose only territory has been beaches, now have the opportunity to teach their lesson of tolerance in a far more important theater of operations: the minds of the children of Bosnia. He would regard this as among his finest achievements.”
Ted Geisel ends The Sneetches story with a universal truth for all to embrace: “I’m quite happy to say that the Sneetches got really quite smart on that day, the day they decided that Sneetches are Sneetches and no kind of Sneetch is the best on the beaches. That day, all the Sneetches forgot about stars and whether they had one, or not, upon thars.”

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s famed book, Yertle the Turtle, we announce the release of a special collectors’ edition serigraph, King of the Pond. Created in an intimate edition, this artwork follows in the footsteps of two classic prints, Ted’s Cat and Grinch at Mt. Crumpit. Highly prized for their collectability and large-scale format, 50th Anniversary prints bring Seuss’s work fully to life.

This larger-than-life image, coupled with the significance of Seuss’s message, enchants kids from one to ninety-two; and the moral which inspired it will ring as true in the future as it has these past fifty years . . . great kings rule best when remembering that “all the turtles are free as turtles and, maybe, all creatures should be.”

Random House and Dr. Seuss Enterprises have joined forces to launch The Lorax Project, an innovative initiative to engage individuals and corporations to do their part to conserve places and species critical to our planet.

In collaboration with this effort, a series of four Earth Friendly Lorax serigraphs are released to promote this worthwhile endeavor within the fine arts community.

The paper used for each Earth Friendly Lorax serigraph is created at mills meeting four key factors for environmental responsibility.

    • Tree-Free
    • Chlorine-Free
    • Mills are Certified to Meet Environmental Standards
    • Use of Alternative Energy
    • Additionally, each serigraph is printed using water-based inks. Water-based inks have the permanence and brilliance of oil based inks, without the use of petroleum.

To further support the central message of Seuss's book The Lorax, fifteen trees will be planted with the purchase of each Earth Friendly Lorax print. Over the course of this project, 20,000 trees will be planted in support of this important environmental initiative.

In celebration of Golden Anniversary of one of the world's greatest literary icons.we announce the release of a special collectors’ edition serigraph, Green Eggs and Ham - 50th Anniversary.

Green Eggs and Ham, the critically acclaimed 1960 book was born out of a $50 wager between Ted Geisel and his Random House publisher, Bennett Cerf, who bet he couldn't write an articulate, entertaining book using only fifty words.

When Bennet Cerf heard Ted's first reading of the book, he seemed dazed, shaking his head over the clear triumph of Green Eggs and Ham.

In the year 2000, Publishers Weekly ranked the book the fourth best selling English-language children's book of all time.
